It takes many collaborating artists to create a successful musical theater experience. Robert Martin was co-author of the book with Don McKellar, and the music and lyrics were by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. It is even more fun when you know the play was a wedding gift. "What I like about being a gangster is doing the gangster-type voice because I like to do accents and funny voices.
"I've never danced, so I've had to struggle with that, but the director said that my character, one of the gangsters pretending to be a pastry chef, was a comic part so I didn't need to be perfect," Boots said. Boots got the part, but Amber's work schedule didn't allow her the time. When his mother, Raylene Boots, heard him singing the songs and doing the dialogue, she encouraged him to try out at the Red Barn, so Boots and his wife, Amber, both tried out for the play. When Riverside High School did "The Drowsy Chaperone," Boots spent months editing it, and in the process he learned the whole play including the songs and dances, but didn't think about getting on stage. After filming four nights, it takes him months to edit the film, which means he is going over it many times. For a number of years, Boots has been filming the musicals at Riverside and Lincoln high schools. "I very much enjoy sharing the experience at the Red Barn."īoots, a 2012 graduate of Riverside High School, is not only making his Red Barn debut, he is making his stage debut.
